Latvian, and East Baltic language written with a variant of the Latin alphabet expanded with the use of diacritics, is the official and national language of Latvia. Statistics about the number of Latvian speakers differ from one source to another. Anyway, it is estimated that there are around 2 million Latvian speakers in the world, most of them being Latvian native speakers living in the Republic of Latvia. However, there are significant Latvian speaking communities in several countries, including about 90,000 Latvians (or Letts) in the United States.
Latvian (latviešu valoda), sometimes known as Lettish, is regulated by the Latvian State Language Center. Although Latvian and Lithuanian are closely related languages, they are not mutually intelligible.
